Over the last handful of weeks, I've lost an additional 2 pounds and 2 inches. My goal was 3, but I feel good about the 2, considering that I focused on incorporating different foods in my diet. I ate more beef, fish, pasta, and experimented with Kefir and Kombucha. The jury is still out on those 2 things as to whether or not I'll keep up with them. They take some work, so we'll see. I was also not as strict as I was during our initial 9 weeks. I had dessert a couple times, Thanksgiving was in there, and when my mom came down we had an evening out with a big dinner. It's a good sign that I was still able to lose a couple pounds through it all.
Considering Christmas is coming up, New Year's, and my trip to Nicaragua, this will be my last blog entry.

Jon Tuesday Week 6
I went to the gym this morning! It was great to be back and feel like I'm back in the groove. Nothing earth shattering to report, but I did get 2 miles in on the eliptical machine and some push-ups/sit-ups in so that was great.
I ate well all day and am ready to keep the gym going!

Jon Week 6 Monday
It has been a bit of a hiatus. Miscommunication and my attention to detail, or lack thereof has been the root!
So, quick update, I have finally rid myself of the cough, but still have a bit of congestion. My motivation has been low the last several weeks, with being sick and the weather, however I feel as though I am about to turn the corner! I am taking some good advice and "hopping on the bandwagon" of winter. We'll see how that treats me.
I had a goal to lose 10 pounds by the end of the year when this second phase started. I'm proud to report that even with my low motivation and lack of consistent workouts I have lost 7 pounds. I have not eaten as solid as normal the last 4 or 5 days, but overall have eaten much better than I used to, so that's a positive sign. For example, I had a few cookies today, but didn't let that derail the entire day like I may have in the past. Instead, I ate a good dinner, (chicken and veggies) and feel good about that.
So, cheers for the night and I will be back to the blogging routine!

Amanda - Phase 2, Week 6, Monday
I went to CF this morning at 9:30:
Thruster
3-3-3-3-3
"Jackie"
1000 meter row
Thruster, 50 reps (45/35)
30 pull-ups
So, the last time we did Thrusters for our strength component was on July 30. At that time, I maxed out at 65# x 3. Today, I did 90# x 3, so I feel good about that.
As far as the WOD, here are my times for Jackie:
June 21 - 15:23 (I did 35# and used the green and purple bands for my pullups)
Aug 21 - 10:18 (I did 35# and used the green and purple bands for my pullups)
Dec 20 - 11:07 (I did 35# and used the blue band for my pullups)
I guess that's a decent progression. I'm not sure. I did my row in 4:20 and did my Thrusters in about 3:00, so I felt good about those times. I definitely had to take a lot of breaks during my pullups. Man, I wish I could get those down! I don't feel like I'm making much progress on them. I feel like they are something I would need to really diligently work on at least 4 days a week to make progress. I'm not sure.
My Kefir has been turning out pretty good, and I made cottage cheese yesterday. It was really easy. I just heated some milk (medium heat) on the stove and gradually poured in some kefir and gently stirred for about a minute. It was amazing. These huge curds started to develop and the milk turned to whey. I then let it sit for 2 minutes, removed the curds, and let them dry in a cheese cloth for about 15 minutes. I ate some while they were warm and they were SO good. I refrigerated the rest, and they were super good chilled as well. I didn't think I'd like them as well without the liquid stuff that cottage cheese normally sits in, but they were so much better. I think I'll make some today too!

Amanda - Phase 2, Week 5, Sunday
I went to that Aerial/Acrobat Conditioning class today. It was a lot of fun! It wasn't cardiovascular, for the most part, but we did a lot of stretching and things that required upper body work, like climbing the silks (basically a silky curtain) and working on the trapeze. I could see taking some type of series in the future.
I worked out 5 of 7 days this week and my meals were pretty good. I did eat a couple things that weren't very healthy for me like a fabulous grilled cheese sandwich and a piece of coconut cream pie, but I've been able to that and maintain my weight, which is a success!

Amanda - Phase 2, Week 5, Saturday
I didn't workout yesterday, but I did do my Gym workout this morning. I decided to do it in shorts. I hadn't done that for a while, and I did notice a difference in my legs. I was pleasantly surprised. I still have work to do, but I enjoyed seeing the improvement!
My meals have been going well, and I will post my results next week. They won't be real dramatic, but I have done well incorporating more variety in my diet at least.

Amanda - Phase 2 - Week 5, Thursday
I didn't work out yesterday, but I did bottle my Kombucha. I think I let it go a little too long, but I put a bit of sugar in it and some pineapple and ginger. I guess I'm supposed to let it sit in the bottle for a few days and then it should be ready. We will see, but I'm a bit skeptical. When I tasted it, I couldn't imagine drinking it. I did read a few places though that you might have to throw out your first batch. I have 2 other gallons 'in process'. One seems to be doing really well and the other one doesn't seem to be doing much at all. I put them on a heating pad, as the heat is supposed to expedite the process. Hopefully at least one of those batches turns out well.
I worked out this morning in the gym. The workout was good. I had good energy and for my last sprint, I ran a quarter mile at 10mph. I felt good about that. Usually I only run my last sprint for 75 seconds which works out to .18 mile. For some reason, I had extra stamina.

Amanda - Phase 2 - Week 5, Tuesday
Crossfit at noon today:
Five rounds for time:
12 Deadlifts
9 Hang Power Cleans
6 Push Jerks
I used 67#. Normally I've used 55 or 65 pounds for my hang power cleans and push jerks, so I decided to go up by a couple pounds. I was the first one done at 11:06. The hardest one to get through was the Hang Power Cleans. I had to set the bar down in the middle of them. I felt good about the workout though.
Other than that, my meals are going well.

Jon Monday Week 5
Well, I survived the 20 inches of snow on Saturday. The weekend was pretty much spent hunkered down, though I did get out and do some shoveling (out of necessity). For the most part I ate well all weekend, but it wasn't perfect because I went to Amy's parents for a Holiday party Sunday.
Today I weighed myself and gained 1 pound over the three days. Not bad, so I'm sure I'll see that I lost that tomorrow. Today I have eaten well and got back on track. I did not work out, but my cold and congestion seem to be mostly gone. I have had a terrible headache all day, which I'm not sure what that's about, perhaps I am dehydrated. I have a gallon of water near me now, so hopefully that will fix it!

Amanda - Phase 2, Week 5, Monday
Well, the weekend was pretty good with mom, though we did have an indulgent dinner on Saturday night. I am back on the horse today though.
To update you on my Kefir experiment, the first batch wasn't so good. Apparently I didn't use enough milk. The second batch was better, but the third batch has been the best yet. I only let it ferment for 15 hours and I used more milk. The consistency is a little thin and it's not real sweet...not like the store bought anyway. I'm still trying to figure out if I can get it to taste like the store bought. If so, that would be great! I'm going to experiment using coconut milk tomorrow and play with the amount of milk and times to ferment to see if I can get the consistency and sweetness I like. I feel like I'm doing ok since I just started though.
About my Kombucha, that seems to be going well. My quart jar looks like it's right on track, but my pint jar looks as if it's lagging behind. I also made 2 gallons this weekend. The instructions recommended using gallons because it allows more breathing, but I didn't haven't any. Anyway, we will see if the gallons produce any better results!
I went to Crossfit today at noon:
TABATA - Complete 32 intervals of 20 seconds of work followed by ten seconds of rest where the first 8 intervals are pull-ups, the second 8 are push-ups, the third 8 intervals are sit-ups, and finally, the last 8 intervals are squats. There is no rest between exercises.
Tabata score is the least number of reps performed in any of the eight intervals.
My least number for each exercise was: 2 Pullups, 4 Pushups, 7 Situps, and 10 Squats. I was trying to pace myself, but I should have pushed myself harder.

Amanda - Phase 2 - Week 4, Friday
I was up at 5am this morning and had only lost a half pound from yesterday, but I did my gym workout and felt really strong. I feel like that makes up for it!
My mom's going to be here shortly and is bringing me my muslin cloth, which I need for making my kefir. It came in last night. I can only hope that my kefir tastes as good as the stuff in the store. I guess I'll find out tomorrow or Sunday, as apparently it doesn't take long to make. I just have to put my grains in a glass jar and pour 2-3 cups of fresh milk over them, cover them with the cloth and rubber band and leave it sit at room temp for 24 hours. Some grains are a little more active than others though, so it's a bit of an art to get it to taste right. We will see tomorrow!

Jon Thursday Week 4
Well, it's 10:30 at night and I am feeling like the cold is finally checking out. I am going to down some drugs before I go to bed to kill it for good!
My goal is to go to the gym tomorrow if all goes well tonight.
Today was good for the most part, though I did eat a bit more today than normal, I'm not sure what exactly the deal was, but I was hungry all day. We'll see how that messes with the scale tomorrow.

Jon Wednesday Week 4
I lost another pound and feel great about the progress. I still have not worked out and it's been almost 3 weeks! That's just wrong. One thing that has improved however is my shoulder feels really good. The chiro said to keep off it for 4-6 weeks and apparently he knows of what he speaks. We'll see what happens when I get back to it, but right now it feels much better than it has in a LONG time, so that's positive.
My cold seems to be finally fading away. There is still a bit of lingering, but overall it's not been so bad. I really only notice it when I go outside and the cold weather just brings it out.

Amanda - Phase 2 - Week 4, Thursday
The kickboxing class was great yesterday. I sweat more than I have in a while, but I didn't feel like I worked as hard. The class only lasted for 45 minutes so perhaps that was part of it. I talked with the owner, who seems fantastic, and she recommended a few other classes that would have more leg work. It's definitely something I could see myself and I'm sure I"ll check it out when I get back from Nicaragua.
I was fairly frustrated when I hopped on the scale this morning. I had gained 2 pounds! It must have been my pasta and tomato sauce from last night. I had 4oz of beef, 1oz of pasta (30 little fusilli noodles) and a can of tomatoes (nothing added). I added herbs to that, pepper, onions, 2tsp of raw sugar, 2tsp salt, and 1oz of parmesan. Overall, my calories were still around 1200. I can only guess that there were too many things my body wasn't used to and clung on to them. Who knows! I want to get my body used to that stuff, but I don't want to gain weight...it's so frustrating. The positive thing is that my energy is still amazing! I'd like to keep that up, too. It feels like a major juggling act right now. My mom is also supposed to be coming this weekend. I'm determined to not feel restricted and keep with my plan at the same time. Regardless, today, my goal is to take off those 2 pounds.

Amanda - Phase 2 - Week 4, Wednesday
I checked on my Kombucha this morning and it looks like my "scobies" are developing! I was so excited to see those little babies. I've been reading that my tea should be ready in 1-2 weeks. I guess I just have to taste it and see?? Apparently, the longer I leave it, the less sweet it will be as the sugar will get used. I can then use my scoby and a bit of tea to make my next batch. My original scoby, the Mother, will then develop a baby scoby. I'm going to give my sister a scoby for Christmas. It's 50/50 whether or not she'll appreciate it. I'll accompany a write-up on the benefits of Kombucha and how to grow/maintain the scoby and how to make/brew more tea. I think it could be something unique she could offer her bed and breakfast guests. Hopefully the tea turns out good! Also, I'm hoping my Kefir grains will be in today or tomorrow. I'm looking forward to grow those babies too!
So, I decided I should try something new for a workout and am going to a boxing class tonight. I've never done marial arts, boxing, or kickboxing. It looks pretty cool. I'm hoping just to find more things that I enjoy doing and to keep my body guessing, of course. I just feel like I need some more intensity right now. I'll let you know how it goes!

Jon Tuesday Week 4
I was right I lost two pounds. Still haven't gotten rid of the cold and congestion so I'm done even referencing it.
Tomorrow I'm sure I'll be back to my weight before last weekend which will be positive. Not too much more going on, as I still haven't gone to the gym and my eating is basically the same every day:
Oatmeal
Banana
Soup
Apple
Meat for dinner
Not sexy, but seems to fill me up and has been working.

Amanda - Phase 2 - Week 4, Tuesday
My energy is still good, so that's great! I'm still experiencing that post-cleanse feeling. I've been super productive and haven't wanted to 'crash' at night. I also got up on my own at 6am this morning. My weight seems to be settling on 121.8, which is the lowest I've been (except for the day after my coconut oil cleanse - but that doesn't count). I had said I had wanted to be around 119.5 by next weekend, but I'm not confident about that. I want to keep up experimenting with different foods, and I want to make sure my energy stays up. I'm still not happy with my lower body and I'm determined to feel like I've exhausted every healthy option for me to get it in the shape I want, I'm just not sure how long it will take. I'll just keep plugging away and see what happens.
Anyway, I went to CF this morning at 8:00 and one of the better workouts I've had in a while:
Overhead Squat
3-3-3-3-3
Conditioning:
4 Rounds for time:
500m Row
10 Overhead Squats (95/65)*
10 Burpees
First, I improved my OH Squat! On Aug 10, I could only do one at 90#, but today I did 3 at 95#. I think I could've done 100 but we ran out of time. This one girl, who has probably 30# on me and is quite muscular, did 105#.
Then, for the WOD, I finished in 18:27, which I felt good about. I did the 65# RX and my time was very competitive with the other females who did RX. It's a good feeling to have my energy and strength back!

Jon Monday Week 4
As predicted I gained 3 pounds over the weekend. Not too surprised by that revelation this morning. What was surprising is that I still have this nagging cough!
It has been much better today so I'll continue to be optimistic. This has been terrible though because I can feel all the progress from going to the gym fading away as I've been so inconsistent. It has been frustrating to say the least.
I have eaten great all day and have a good supper in mind so no worries there, I figure I'll lose a pound or two tomorrow.

Amanda - Phase 2 - Week 4, Monday
I had a good day on Sunday. I did gain back 2 of the 3.2 pounds, but I was expecting that, and I woke up with an abundance of energy! That post-cleanse feeling is always incredible! Well, I spent most of my day cooking. I made Mashed Parsnips, Coconut Honey Mustard Dressing, and Kombucha Tea. This Kombucha Tea is exciting for me. If I did it right, it’s supposed to grow live/active cultures, which are probiotics – great for my intestines and body. I won’t know for a couple weeks if it worked. So, I have a couple jars sitting on top of my refrigerator right now. They have to ferment and then they’ll grow a white film, about a ¼” thick, which will be the bed for the good bacteria. I can then use that to make more Kombucha after that. You can see the process here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fi4TZ6aTUg4&feature=related
I also order Kefir Grains. I heard about Kefir (it’s a cross between yogurt and milk but with live cultures) when I went to a Health Spa in Palm Springs a couple years back, but I thought it was too much hassle. After Thanksgiving and having my skin break out, I decided I must get more probiotics in my diet. The coconut oil was already a great anti-bacterial which I noticed the effects of, so I figured getting more of that kind of stuff would be even better! Thus, the Kombucha and Kefir. Anyway my Kefir Grains are supposed to be in by the end of the week. The “grains” are what allows me to grow the cultures and produce the Kefir. I can buy Kefir from Trader Joe’s, and I love the taste of it, but it’s got to be ‘purer’ if I can grow my own. Plus, I have more flexibility with it then. I can make it out of coconut milk or regular milk or whatever. I can even make cheese with it. This will be a fun endeavor for me!

Jon Week 3 Sunday
It was an interesting and long weekend! On Saturday I did go to the gym, but that didn't work out too well. My warm-up went good but as I started to run I couldn't stop coughing. It was almost immediate that I started coughing and couldn't stop. I tried for a few minutes but it wouldn't stop, so I quit and went to the sauna and steam room. Spent some time in the hot tub and went home, not the best gym visit ever.
Saturday night we had all of my family over for a holiday party, which was a lot of fun. I didn't eat too much, but certainly drank much more than I have in the last 12 weeks. Because of that today has been very laid back. I woke up and started cleaning up, took a little nap and repeated pretty much throughout the day.
I know I've been saying this all week, but I feel as if my congestion is giving up and moving on. I have still had the cough today but it's been less frequent.
I didn't weigh myself today, but I will tomorrow and get back on track. I'm sure I've gained 3 or 4 pounds though.

Amanda - Phase 2 - Week 3, Saturday
Well, I did 1/2 cup of Coconut Oil last night around 7:30. It definitely did something becuase I was up most of the night going to the bathroom. After I drank it, I wasn't sure I was going to be able to keep it down. Just the thought of drinking that much oil made me sick. It was hard to go to sleep, too, because I felt so bloated. I also started to get hot flashes and would break out in a sweat. The first time I got up to go the bathroom was at 11:00, then 1:00, then 3:30, then finally again at 7:00. I tried to look if there was anything interesting, but it mostly looked like bile. There wasn't really anything solid. At 7, when I weighed myself, I had lost 3.2 pounds. I'm sure most of that was water, as my body felt totally depleted. I couldn't go to Crossfit or really do much of anything. I spent most of the day in bed, trying to recover. I decided to eat my normal meals because I felt so weak. I'm supposed to start back on normal food gradually, but I just felt like I had to eat. I started feeling like I was getting some energy back when I woke up from a nap around 4:00. I should feel much better tomorrow. I'll probably gain the 3.2 pounds back tomorrow, but that's understandable...hopefully it's only a pound or two though. :) Based on last night, I'd say the coconut oil liver cleanse definitely worked.

Jon Week 3 Friday
This morning I woke up and didn't start coughing immediately so I thought I had some good luck. I got on the scale and lost 3 pounds, which was great. I was geared for the cold to be gone and the day to be great. Well, the cold is still here and the day wasn't great but pretty good.
Clearly since it's almost midnight I have had issues sleeping so far. I'm hoping to get back to bed here and get a full 8 hours. Cross your fingers!
The goal is to go to the gym regardless of how I feel tomorrow and see how it goes.

Amanda - Phase 2 - Week 3, Friday
So, I lost 1.2 pounds this morning...another 0.8 to go. Hopefully I'll get there tomorrow. I'm going to stay on the cleanse and try to get in more than 9 Tablespoons, as I haven't really seen much of a result besides the weight loss. I read that someone drank 1/2 cup VCO right before bed and the next morning she noticed all this yeast in the toilet...a great sign that it's working. I think I'm going to try that tonight. A few years back, I did a liver cleanse and drank a bunch of salt water throughout the day and then before bed I drank a half cup of Olive Oil. There were at least 50 little stones in the toliet the next morning. They said you were supposed to see 100s but I was amazed to see what I did. I was hoping to see some type of result like that with this cleanse. Perhaps I just need to get in more and get more at one time.
About my skin, it did look better this morning...not perfect, but defintely better. I'm going to keep up that Coconut Vinegar thing and see how it goes. I also did this 'oil pulling' thing yesterday where I swish coconut oil in my mouth for 20 minutes and then spit it out. Apparently, it's supposed to 'pull' the toxins and bacteria from your system. In addition, because there are supposedly certain points on the tongue that correlate to various organs, the organs can get the a different benefit of the oil than swallowing it. I'm not convinced about this, but it's worth a try since it's so easy to do.
So, I went to CF this morning at 7. I actually woke up on my own at 5:30.
2K Row - Time Trial
Rest 10 minutes:
On each 2 minute interval alternate between:
Max set of pushups
Max set of strict pullups
4 sets total of each.
On July 27, I did the 2k in 9:13. Just based on doing a 500m or a 1000m, I figured I could do 8:40, but I knew the cleanse would affect it, especially considering my workout from yesterday. Well, I did it in 9:08. My muscles got so fatigued, not to mention my lack of stamina. I figured I'd do it again once I get back to my normal routine. My WOD was ok...still problem with fatigue, of course. One of my sets maxed out at 15 pushups and 10pullups, using the blue band (midway band). I hate experiencing a decline in my performance, but I know I can get it back quickly once I go off the cleanse. I think a cleanse a couple times a year is important though, so I beleive it's worth it, in the long run.

Jon Week 3 Thursday
Well, dinner last night out caused me to gain 2 pounds! No good!! I got back into the swing of things today and ate perfect as well as cut out some calories this evening for dinner so I'm hoping to be back to "normal" tomorrow.
I am still suffering from a cold, but I do feel it getting better I think. The cold weather I've noticed really escalates it, so I'm going to wear a scarf tomorrow and see if that helps.
Also, tonight I am going to take some more Tylenol pm and some Robitussin in hopes that the drugs will finally work!
I have noticed that since I haven't been going to the gym my motivation has been terrible. I come home from work and just want to go to bed. I'm not sure if it is a combination of the cold weather as well, but I'm not liking it at all.
I won't even bother with the gym tomorrow and will shoot to go Saturday morning. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed and hoping for the best. It's got to give right???

Amanda - Phase 2 - Week 3, Thursday
So, I lost another 2 pounds this morning! I guess this Coconut Oil cleanse is going to stick around another day. Aside from quickly losing the weight I had put on over Thanksgiving (still another 2 pounds to go), I went to the bathroom several times yesterday. So, that's a good sign it's cleansing my system. This morning, I went to the bathroom normally, so I guess there's still stuff in there waiting to get out.
The other positive thing was that I woke up this moring at 6:30, without setting the alarm. I much prefer to wake up around that time vs. the 7:30 I was getting up every morning since Saturday. Eating poorly really does affect a lot of things! Speaking of that, my skin really didn't look any better this morning, so I was doing some research and saw a lot of testimonies for applying Raw Apple Cider Vinegar and eating 2T/day. I thought perhaps I'd try the Coconut Vinegar, since it's an anti-bacterial, I thought it might work even better. People said they noticed a big difference within a day or two, so we'll see how things look tomorrow. I will say though that it really burned when I put it on and it made my skin really red. I applied some VCO on top of it to soothe it and it seemed to help.
So, I did my gym workout this morning. My balance and stamina were defintely off. I had to rest more than normal. I'm guessing it's from the cleanse. I'm still eating around 1000 calories, but I'm sure the carbs make a huge difference. Also, the VCO is different than other foods in that it goes straight to your liver. I had to take a nap yesterday as well, so all those things will affect how long I stay on the cleanse. Today may be my last day, but I'll decide that tomorrow morning.

Amanda - Phase 2 - Week 3, Wednesday
So, I woke up this morning and had lost 2.2 pounds! I have another 4 to go to get back to where I was. Yesterday, I had decided to start this Coconut Oil cleanse. I'm suppose to get in a Tablespoon of oil every hour, basically, and then drink lemon water with sea salt. The lemon is supposed to help the cleansing process and the salt will help replenish my electrolytes while I cleanse. I didn't get in 14T yesterday. I only got in about 8 (about 1000 calories). I'm not sure I'll make it to the 14. By the end of the day, I was almost getting sick at the thought of another Tablespoon. The cleanse is supposed to go anywhere from 3 - 10 days. I'm sure I'll only do the 3, particuarly with the 'sick' thoughts I had last night. Anyway, the main reason I'm doing it is to rid my body of all the sugar from Thanksgiving. It's amazing how that sugar affects me, in may ways. First, my complexion was so clear last Wednesday and Thursday, and then I started to breakout on Friday and it got worse Saturday and Sunday. My skin started to clear up again on Tuesday and looks/feels a lot better today. It's no coincidence. The sugar feeds the bacteria and it multiplies. It then becomes a vicious cycle because the more bacteria, the more you crave the sugar in order to feed the bacteria. The only way to stop the cycle is to starve the bacteria and kill it. By not eating any sugar, the bacteria staves, then the coconut oil, being an anti-bacterial, kills it. So, in addition to my skin, I also notice a huge difference in my sweet cravings. On Sunday, though I was eating well, I defintely wanted something sweet. As of last night, I still wanted something sweet, but it was more manageable. When I don't have any sugar (in any form, except fruit) I don't crave it. It's logical to say, just don't eat it, but I don't think I'd ever deprive myself the enjoyment of dessert. I think I just need to learn to manage it better, and part of that, I think, is that when I do have dessert, to make sure it's made with whole ingredients like raw cane sure, or whole wheat flour, etc. I think that makes a difference.
Here's my update with CF this morning at 7:
Press
5-5-5-3-3 (I maxed out at 65# X 3, which I matched from Nov 19)
Conditioning:
AMRAP in 15 minutes:
50 Double Under's
20 Box Jumps
So, 4X singles wasn't an option to replace the DUs. I was forced to do the DUs, so I only got in 3 rounds. I tend to do 2 singles then a double, do that a few times, and then I mess up. I'm still not efficient, but I haven't worked on these. I do think it's a good idea to force myself to do them in a WOD though even though it slows me down. It's probably the only way I"ll ever get to be consistent with them.

Jon Wed. Week 3
Tylenol PM is my new favorite drug! Other than my son coming into our room at 2:30 in the morning I slept through the night! I woke up feeling refreshed and though I still have some cogestion I feel that I am getting better!
I did lose a pound today, which was nice, even though I haven't been to the gym. I'm hoping for the illness to go away by tomorrow so I can feel normal.
